Un Viaggio nel Cuore dell’Irpinia tra Storia e Suggestione
Treat yourself to an unforgettable day in the wonderful village of Zungoli, located at the furthest edge of Irpinia, on the border with the Puglia region along the ancient pathas of transhumance.
Let yourself be guided through the discovery of this village with ancient Byzantine origins, still perched today at the foot of the donjon built by the Norman Junculo, from whom the name “Zungoli” is likely derived. The castle, which now dominates the square in front, reveals its elegance while subtly hinting at its rugged past. As you step within its thick walls, you can still sense the lingering atmosphere of a place once inhabited. Its rooms, with wide panoramic views, offer an exclusive look over the Ufita valley and the village itself.

Join us as we wander through the narrow streets of the village, discovering the typical fortified structures known as “case pontili,” while exploring charming and intriguing corners. We’ll enter the ancient house, rediscovering traditions and ways of life long past. Amidst stories and the intoxicating aromas wafting from the kitchens of those who still live in the village, we will reach the town square, where we’ll admire what was once the town hall and the majestic Palazzo Caputi. The breathtaking view from the portico of San Nicola awaits us.
As we ascend the narrow street, known locally as the rua, your gaze will be drawn to an old, weathered sign, a reminder of the typical inn that once stood there. Soon after, a wrought-iron gate will open, allowing access to the underground, where we’ll visit what are still called the “Byzantine Caves,” guardians of the roots of this magical Irpinian village.
Leaving the dim light of the caves, we will be embraced by the divine light of the Mother Church of Santa Maria Assunta, which houses an ancient baptismal font and the 18th-century statue of the protector of Zungoli, Saint Anna.
We will return to Piazza Castello, filled with curiosity and anecdotes, carrying a piece of Irpinia in our hearts.
